What is the difference between a Balm and Moisturiser?

Posted by Alison Rogers on

With so many skincare products on the market, choosing the right one to hydrate and heal your skin can feel overwhelming. Two of the most common options—balms and moisturisers—may seem similar, but they work quite differently. Understanding these differences can help you make the best choice for your skin's needs.

What is a Balm?

A balm is a concentrated blend of oils and nut butters, such as shea butter or cocoa butter, typically set with natural wax. What makes balms unique is that they contain no water. This water-free formulation means balms are naturally resistant to mould growth and can stay fresh for up to a year without the need for preservatives or emulsifiers.

Balms provide intense, long-lasting moisturisation and deliver powerful healing properties from their natural ingredients. Because they're so concentrated, you only need to apply a small amount, and reapplication isn't needed as frequently as with lighter products.

Different oils offer different benefits and textures for various parts of the body. For example, cold-pressed hemp seed oil is exceptionally light, making it ideal for facial skin, while richer oils like almond oil are better suited for hands and body.

What is a Moisturiser?

The majority of skincare products on the market are moisturisers or lotions. These are essentially a blend of oils mixed with water and other ingredients. Moisturisers feel light and absorb quickly into the skin, which many people find appealing. However, this lighter texture means they often need to be applied more regularly and in larger quantities compared to balms.

Because moisturisers contain both oil and water, they require additional ingredients to remain stable and safe:

  • Emulsifiers are added to prevent the oil and water from separating in the bottle
  • Preservatives are necessary to prevent the product from becoming mouldy or rancid

While natural emulsifiers and preservatives exist, most commercial products use synthetic chemical ingredients because they're more cost-effective. Although these ingredients are legally approved as safe, some people find they can irritate sensitive skin, and many prefer to choose more natural alternatives.

Which Should You Choose?

The choice between a balm and a moisturiser comes down to your skin's needs and your personal preferences:

  • Choose a balm if you want the thicker, more natural option with intensive hydration, pure ingredients without preservatives, and a product that lasts longer with less frequent application
  • Choose a moisturiser if you prefer the lighter texture that absorbs quickly and don't mind more frequent reapplication

For those with sensitive skin or anyone seeking a more natural skincare routine, balms offer a pure, effective solution with minimal ingredients and maximum benefits.
